The Hankin Computerized College Football Rankings utilizes a simple algorithm to calculate a team's offensive and defensive rank, their power and their strength of schedule without using the bias of points scored. This algorithm, consisting of the formulas outlined below, enables us to position each team within our ranking system. Please note that the accuracy of the ranking improves as more data is provided (ie. more games are played) since the formulas take into consideration a team's home field advantage, division, and ever changing strength of schedule. The strength of schedule also makes an assumption that opposing teams will be progressing or improving at the same pace during the course of a season. We strongly believe that, until a bowl system is established, human-based polling is subjective and unfair to "lesser known" schools.

PointsFor: # Points scored by team for each game (Used only for determining win/loss/tie)
PointsAgainst: # Points scored against team for each game (Used only for determining win/loss/tie)
YardsFor: # Yards achieved by team for each game
YardsAgainst: # Yards achieved against team for each game
Division: Division 1A (FBS) = 1, Division 1AA (FCS) = 2, etc.
Location: Home game = 1, Away game = 2, Neutral Site = 0
Wins: When PointsFor > PointsAgainst Then 1 - Division/10 + Location/10 Else 0
Losses: When PointsFor < PointsAgainst Then 1 + Division/10 - Location/10 Else 0
Ties: ( When PointsFor = PointsAgainst Then 1 + Division/10 - Location/10 Else 0 ) / 2
Strength: ( Wins / Games ) + ( Ties / Games )
Strength of Schedule: SUM ( Opponents Strength ) / Total # Games   
Power: ( SUM ( Wins * Strength + 1 ) / ( Games * 2 ) ) - ( SUM ( Losses * ( 2 - Strength ) ) / ( Games * 2 ) ) + ( SUM ( Ties * Strength + 1 ) / ( Games * 2 ) )
Offense: SUM ( YardsFor / Division ) / Games / 100
Defense: 1 - ( SUM ( YardsAgainst * Division ) / Games / 100 )
Ranking: Strength of Schedule + Power + Offense + Defense
