The Hankin Computerized College Football Rankings utilizes a simple algorithm to calculate a team's offensive and defensive rank, their power and their strength of schedule. This algorithm, consisting of the formulas outlined below, enables us to accurately position each team within our ranking system. Please note that the accuracy of the ranking improves as more data is provided (ie. more games are played) since the formulas take into consideration a team's home field advantage, division, and ever changing strength of schedule. The strength of schedule also makes an assumption that opposing teams will be progressing or improving at the same pace during the course of a season. A lot of thought, and trial and error, has gone into making this ranking system accurate and fair. We strongly believe that, until a bowl system is established, human-based polling is subjective and unfair to "lesser known" schools. The Hankin Computerized College Football Rankings provides an objective method of determining or predicting a team's performance.

Formulas

PointsFor: # Points scored by team for each game
PointsAgainst: # Points scored against team for each game
Division: Division 1A = 1, Division 1AA = 2, etc.
Location: Home game = 1, Away game = 2
Wins: When PointsFor > PointsAgainst Then 1 - Division/1000 + Location/1000 Else 0
Losses: When PointsFor < PointsAgainst Then 1 + Division/1000 - Location/1000 Else 0
Ties: ( When PointsFor = PointsAgainst Then 1 + Division/1000 - Location/1000 Else 0 ) / 2
Strength: ( Wins / Games ) + ( Ties / Games )
Strength of Schedule: SUM ( Opponents Strength ) / Total # Games
Power: ( SUM ( Wins * Strength + 1 ) / ( Games * 2 ) ) - ( SUM ( Losses * ( 2 - Strength ) ) / ( Games * 2 ) ) + ( SUM ( Ties * Strength + 1 ) / ( Games * 2 ) )
Offense: SUM ( PointsFor ) / Games / 100
Defense: 1 - ( SUM ( PointsAgainst ) / Games / 100 )
Ranking: Strength of Schedule + Power + Offense + Defense

* When using our rankings to determine which team should win a game, Power is often a better measurement
  as it removes the penalty for playing weaker teams due to their lower Strength of Schedule. Please also
  note that any team within 10 - 15 positions of another should be able to be to beat that other team.
  A higher ranking just means that team should be favored. This is where Power can be a better predictor!
  A great example of this is the ranking of Boston College during weeks 6 and 7 of the 2007 season. Even
  though they beat Notre Dame in week 7, they fell 5 places; however, their Power jumped from 4th to 2nd!
